However, Prometheus had made them too close to the gods and most were awakening to the cosmos so Zeus asked Hephaistos to create a woman, Pandora. He gave her a vase in which was locked the hybris, all the evils and Pandora could not help opening it. The evils escaped and only the hope of working a miracle remained in the jar.
Then Zeus condemned Prometheus to be chained to a rock and to have his liver devoured every day by his eagle. If Prometheus was later forgiven on condition of always wearing a ring with one end of the rock, men suffered and their suffering did not end in the next life. Zeus feared that some awakening to the cosmos would come to overthrow him just as he had done the titans. So he withdrew into the heavens and entrusted the charge of the Earth to his daughter, the goddess Athena.
