One of Ben’s formative memories was waking up in the middle of the night and wandering into the den, where he caught his dad doing something Ben wasn’t quite old enough to understand. His father froze when he first saw his son standing there, but then slowly continued what he’d been doing. Eyes locked the entire time, neither said a word as his dad brought himself to orgasm, after which his dad simply said, “Go back to bed Ben.”

Neither of them ever spoke about it afterward and it never happened again, but Ben never forgot the experience. Old enough now to understand what had happened, it has become one of his favorite memories of his dad. And when no one else is home, Ben liked to put on his dad’s bath robe, sit in his dad’s chair and imagine all the other ways that night could have gone.
