Lune is the player avatar from “Storystellar”, a game revisiting several classic children’s tales weaved together in one giant overarching plot with a sci-fi stylisation. From dark Grimm tales to moral fables to upbeat stories, the game hops around thematically and can be enjoyed both by children
for its apparent simplicity and straightforwardness, and by grown-ups who can recognize the different references, but also appreciate the underlying themes or the sci-fi coating.

Each narrative beat is represented by a different mechanic, like flying in definite trajectories, finding routes between planets and other abstract landmasses or short puzzles, but the main and recurrent one is one of platforming. Lune can jump, dash, fly in all directions in short bursts and grapple to skyrings, making for a very aerial platforming experience.

K is for Krow, the heroine from the dark and violent gothic western “Sinner’s Gulch”, a third person action game based on frenetic battles against a massive amount of opponents.

As she is killed in the beginning of the game, Krow’s is a tale of revenge, increasingly bloody, weird and mad - it starts as a simple hunt for those who killed her to exact “righteous” justice, but eventually develops into gargantuan battles against demented town crowds and supernatural creatures as Krow reexplores and deconstructs the legends of the West.

The environments, a mix of classic western imagery and gothic ghost towns, supported the haunting atmosphere of the game and made for memorable backgrounds for the battles, especially when the real world began giving way to the landscapes of hell - figuratively speaking… or was it ?

Jean is the superspy from “Keep Your Heart Close”.

Designed as a modern take on James Bond in a dystopian possible near-future, Jean was a skilled engineer working for the “Ministry of Surveillance” and exploring possible cases of corruption, corporate espionage and other state threats (or so they were called).

Featuring gameplay based around reconnaissance, planning and execution, the game took hints from PC tactical shooters and applied them to a third person stealth game focused on a single avatar.
The missions were open ended and contained several objectives to complete, often using varied uses of Jean’s technical skills and her trusty multi-tool. Hacking, redirecting elevators, rewiring alarms, fire sprinklers lights and computer access were some of the minigames presented as puzzles which the player could complete in several attempts, as (s)he watched around for the patrols.

Unfortunately, the game came out on Saturn in 2000, in the twilight years of the console as a last desperate effort, just as another, well known spy game came out on N64, ironically a truer spiritual successor to James Bond’s latest prowesses. The game faded to obscurity despite its homages to different spy series and films (not least of all the original “Impossible Mission” series and its famous elevator scenes).

Ivanyia is the lead character from “Raincall”. A doctor by trade, she battles the evil taking place in the countryside of Dunyia : a malevolent series of climatologic events that spread various diseases.
The game plays as an open world, as you search for victims of the different possible afflictions. Once you locate somebody you think you can save, it’s up to you to take him back to shelter, or begin to help on the spot (though it’s a lot riskier), and then proceed with treatment using your limited supplies.
If you diagnosed the symptoms correctly, you can then move on to operate on the patient in a form of surgical simulator… all the while checking that the weather doesn’t turn foul on you.

A very stressful and desperate experience, the game is a form of survival where there are no enemies, only dwindling resources, and a growing sense of hopelessness - is it even possible for you to save those who can help you determine what’s happening?

“Honey Rose” is the defined alias of the player character in the game with the same name.

Albeit a normal high school student during the day, Honey takes on her true colors at nightfall in lucha libre competitions. The game is an exercice in balance - will the player focus on his daily life, his nightly rising star persona, or try to find a balance between the growing demands of the two? Will he let some of the people he meets on either side know of his situation on the other?

Part dating-sim, part gestion, part one-on-one fighting, the game struck a peculiar balance but still went largely unnoticed due to poor marketing and the competition of other, focused fighting games (and, admittedly, a janky fighting system relying on the player’s stats).
Those who went for the immersive experience of having to manage a double-life didn’t come back disappointed though, as the continuous requests for a “Second Honey” show!

Ghost is the point (wo)man from Squad Nine, the main group of the story of “Chain of Command”, the “story-based military shooter”, controversially acclaimed for its lack of multiplayer.

Quiet and strong-willed, she imposes her rhythm during her missions through short, to-the-point comments on the situation to her squadmates. Though an FPS, the game establishes a strong sense of character : the player lives the events through her eyes, but she’s by no means an empty
avatar to project on. And it’s her capacity to remain cool-headed that determines how events play out in the script. The game may be a linear, thoroughly scripted ride, it manages to propose a feeling of identification through characterization that allows a degree of role-play, and eventually
gives a sensation of control on the events that occur in the late game.

F is for Felicidad, the brooding Mexican heroine from the spaghetti western “West of the Rails”.

The game’s main point of interest was a crafting system for guns, allowing players to combine everyday items with weaponry to try and conceal their arsenal while walking around.
The stealth portion of the game depended greatly on the deceit skill of the player - the more hidden the weapons were, the more risks they could take without arousing suspicion. And when the shootouts inevitably began, the surprised reactions to unleashed hail of bullets from the unlikeliest places were worth the price of admission alone. Who can forget the shotgun/walking cane from the old lady disguise,
or the piano gatling in the saloon?

Today’s letter is E, for Edyn, the dynamic heroine of “Highwinds of Selphyria”. HoS is a surprising JRPG take on western fantasy tropes - “Tolkien with airships”, as it was dubbed by fans.
The game unfortunately came out in the early 3D days, leaving the memory of a poor rendering of the ambitious original concepts and illustrations. Still, the characters manage to shine through the unpolished visuals, thanks to their expressiveness and eccentric personalities (though the english translation was sometimes as unpolished as the 3D) - the story being mainly an absurd comedy.
It can probably be found on Ebay, though at a pretty high price, the game having acquired nothing short of a cult status!
