There is no certainty about the objective of the bombardment of Guernica which is located about 30 kilometers east of Bilbao, where, during the bombing, about 120 people were killed in a city of 6,000 inhabitants.
Guernica lacked strategic military importance in the war between the Nationals and Republicans. At first there was speculation that the air operation was aimed at destroying a weapons factory and a bridge or the Tree of Guernica which symbolizes basque´s nationalist and democratic tradition but none of them was hit by the bombs that rained down on the population.
Today, few people remember the horror of living in Guernica that Monday 75 years ago. Franco had no interest in preserving the ruins of the population as an anti-militarist monument. The town was completely rebuilt and the population increased again to reach a total of over 18,000 inhabitants. |
