There was only one problem.
If a follower died at the hands of a elemental (you call them demons now correct?)

It could cut there connection and even steal the soul for it or it's master.

To counter this I brought in a system that a deity could only claim the soul it was aligned to.

Spirits that are not aligned with a deity.
Will be doomed to wander the earth emotionless.... forever
