Reponse:

They aren’t retractable (which is why he had to file them down in the ‘special chapter’) but in retrospect that would have been a really good idea. I don’t think birds ever have retractable claws, so it never crossed my mind. As for males and females, they’re the same size in proportion to their hands. Bigger hands = bigger talons. :)
